Obituary for William M "Bill" Dolan
William “Bill” Dolan, 88, previously of Mentor, Painesville, Willoughby Hills, Cleveland and Paradise Valley, Ariz., died Feb. 25, 2019, at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland.
Mr. Dolan was preceded in death by his loving wife of 38 years, Catherine (nee Bogatay) Dolan; second wife of 19 years, Dr. Kay Gregory; parents, Martin and Winifred (Cushin) Dolan; brothers, Martin Dolan (Ohio), John Dolan, Andrew Dolan and Thomas Dolan; and nephews, John Dolan Jr. and Kenneth Dolan, all of Long Island, N.Y.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary Samuels (Harold, dec.) and Cathy (Carl) Vultaggio of Long Island, N.Y.; children, Mary Ann (Greg) Lipstreuer of Painesville Township, Rosie (Rick) Baker of Scottsdale, Ariz., JoAnn (Brian) Brusky of Kirtland, Nancy (Dan) Ramga of Painesville Township; stepdaughters, Susan (Matt) Pedaci and Jayne (Ken) DeLong; grandchildren, Greg (Jessie) Dennison, Melissa (Bailey) Mac Knight, Sara Dennison (George Rimes), Brianna (Tom) Barrett, Abigayle Boslett, Mary Boslett, Ashlee (Wes) Hawkins, Kurt Baker (David), Matt Baker (Jenny Lee); and great-grandchildren, Liam and Logan Hawkins, Ian Mac Knight, Carter Dennison and Madison Baker; and many nieces and nephews across the US.
He was raised with loving, Irish parents, four brothers, two sisters and his grandmother in New York City, attended Catholic schools and grew up playing any and all ball in the streets of New York City, served honorably in the U.S. Navy for four years on the destroyers, the USS Power and Jarvis, was a radar man, and earned Petty Officer Third Class, put himself through school at night, correspondence and advanced courses for engineering with Ohio Bell and Bell Labs.
He married and buried two great loves, Cathy and Kay, was a role model Dad, still earning the right to be called “Daddy,” served as a healer at St. Felicitas and St. Joseph Christian Life Center, was an avid spiritual, charismatic retreat participant and professed Secular Franciscan and enjoyed working at the Lake County homeless shelter and Cleveland soup kitchen serving meals. He loved the outdoors, the family cabin in the Allegheny National Forest, was a serious hiker, long distance walker, backpacker and avid gardener and loved European travel starting with post World War II Naval Goodwill tours and UK, Spain and Assisi, Italy in retirement. He was a great carpenter, remodeler, reader, learner and teacher.
Mr. Dolan retired in 1986, after 31 years of service as Radio Systems Engineer at Ohio Bell. He fondly recalls installing the first U.S. site for cell phone towers in Ohio. As a Sierra Club member, Bill worked with the government to create the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, south of Cleveland. He was active in the Cleveland arts and was a regular supporter of the Cleveland Orchestra.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Divine Word Catholic Church, 8100 Eagle Road, Willoughby. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Painesville.
