Mr. Tobin passed away Aug. 20, 2017, at Holly Hill Nursing Home following an extensive illness.
Born March 14, 1931, to Charles and Mary Tobin, Dick lived in Cleveland until moving to Willoughby Hills in 1961.
He attended Glendale High School and graduated from John Carroll University with a degree in chemistry, the scientific field that fueled his passions from boyhood through his adult life.
Dick worked for General Electric’s Lamp Division in Euclid for 40 years. He traveled internationally developing and testing new projects that earned numerous patents for G.E. An unfortunate injury caused his early retirement in 1995.
Following his college graduation, he married Mary (Lenehan), and together raised seven children. He was a member of the Holy Name Society at Immaculate Conception Church in Willoughby and later the Shepherds Ministry at St. Noel in Willoughby Hills. Dick’s many interests, always pursued with family and friends in mind, included photography, hiking and camping, long distance running, Friday night Pinochle and Cleveland Orchestra concerts. He was Scoutmaster for BSA Troop 85, and was a member of the N.E. Ohio Run Club. His “running career” highlights included the Cleveland Revco, Boston, New York and Dublin Marathons.
Dick is survived by his children, Mary Beth (John) of Raleigh, N.C., Timothy of Essex, Conn., Catherine of Zanesville, Michael (Michelle) of Leroy Township, Susan (Anthony) Cochran of Zanesville, Matthew (Sandy) of Weymouth, Mass., and Richard (Dawn) of Seattle, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents, Charles and Mary; sister, Mary (nee Tobin) Hastings; and brother-in-law, Thomas Hastings.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name are suggested to Holly Hill Healthcare Community, 10190 Fairmount Road, Newbury, OH 44065, Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110, or the charity of your choice.
