Obituary for George L. Plavcan

George L.   Plavcan
Funeral Mass for George L. Plavcan, 86, of Mentor, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bede the Venerable Church, 9114 Lakeshore Blvd., Mentor. Family and friends to meet at church.
George passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 at his residence with his family at his side.
Born Dec. 6, 1931 in Cleveland, he was a Lake County resident for 64 years, living in Willoughby and mostly in Mentor.
George was a member of St. Bede the Venerable Church, where he served as a Lay Distributor, Lector and Minister of Praise; a member of Knights of Columbus, Third Degree Council 13755 Past Grand Knight and Fourth Degree Cardinal Newman General Assembly 837; served as a volunteer at Governor’s Pointe Assisted Living; honored as Volunteer of the Year at the Lake County YMCA; and charter member of Red Cross Hall
of Fame, gold level blood donor of 266 pints of blood.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, former member of American Legion Post 7, Mentor Post 9295 and Madison Post 112 and present member of Palmer Roberts Post 214 in Willoughby, Amvets Post 40 Mentor Headlands and The Catholic War Veterans.
George formerly worked for A &P Grocery Store, Herb’s TV, East End TV and Appliance, St. Bede’s Church and Castello’s Florist.
George was the loving father of Christopher (Kathleen, nee McCarthy) Plavcan; cherished grandfather of Gabrielle (Anthony) LoConti and Nathan Plavcan; great grandfather of Christian Plavcan-Evangelista, Ashtian and Giana Amato, Nicholas Vitelli, Anthony, Aubrey and Thomas LoConti; special grand papa to Jean, Skylar and Angela; and uncle of many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillian (nee Svec) Plavcan; parents, John and Anna (nee Shivey) Plavcan; siblings, Grace (Ted) Reeves, John L. (Margaret) Plavcan, Vincent P. (Loretta) Plavcan and Robert (Eleanor) Plavcan; and nephew, Dean Plavcan.
Family will receive friends 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route2), Mentor. Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Twp.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in George’s name to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland 44110 or St. Bede the Venerable’s Knights of Columbus, Council 13755.
