Obituary for Dorothy S Brooks

Dorothy S Brooks
Dorothy S. Brooks, 86, of Willoughby, passed away peacefully Monday, June 11, 2018.
Born June 15, 1931, Dorothy was a lifetime resident of the Cleveland area and was a retired elementary school teacher from the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School System.
During most of her career, she served as a music teacher, where she shared her love of music and the performing arts with the children she felt privileged to teach. She held a Master's Degree in Education from Kent State University and prior to her retirement, she returned to the classroom as a third grade teacher.
Dorothy will be remembered as an amazing soul for her strong yet gentle presence, witty sense of humor, patience, kindness, generosity, and wisdom. She was deeply committed to her family and was looking forward to the birth of her third grandson next month. She was very active in the Breckenridge Village community and served in a number of capacities including the church choir, president of the book club, member (and often winner) of the Wii bowling league, and volunteer in the community pantry. She was an avid reader, enjoyed trips to the theatre, and spending as much time as she could with family and friends.
Dorothy was the loving mother of Carolyn M. (Darrin) Gura, Laura J. Brooks (Heidi Kamp), and John H. Brooks (Aimee); cherished grandmother of Taylor, Jordan, Madison, Lily, Gunnar and John Jr.; beloved aunt of Katie (Vincent) Zvomuya; and great-aunt of Oscar and Quincy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Marie (nee Bailey) Sommers; brother, Donald (Norma) Sommers, and grandson, Adam Gura.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at the Lyons Chapel located in the Nason Center of Ohio Living Breckenridge Village, 36859 Ridge Road, Willoughby.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her name to Ohio Living Home Care & Hospice at Breckenridge Village, 36855 Ridge Road, Willoughby, OH 44094.
Arrangements are entrusted to McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Homes in Willoughby and Mentor.
