Obituary for Ronald G Martin

Ronald G Martin
Ronald G. Martin, 71, of Concord Township, passed away peacefully June 14, 2018, at the Cleveland Clinic Hospice in Cleveland, after a short illness. Having resided in Lake County for more than 30 years, he is now joyfully residing in his eternal home with Jesus forever.
Ron was born Jan. 20, 1947, in Cleveland, to the late Albert and Wilma Martin. He was the brother of Delia (Tom, dec.) VanHall, Alan (Arlene) Martin, and Richard Martin; and uncle to Cynthia Hudgins (Gail Gorgas), Michelle (Joe) Dubosh and Jeffrey (Nicole) Martin.
On June 12, 1994, Ron married Elizabeth “Betsy” Mason and became a father to David (Susan) Mason and Kathleen Mason (Brad Keith); and grandfather to Graham, Ian, Joshua, Kristen, Matt and Cameron.
Ron graduated from St. Joseph High School in Cleveland in 1965, and was a 1967 graduate of Cuyahoga Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Arts. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
After being honorably discharged, Ron enjoyed a lengthy retail career with The Higbee Co./Dillard’s, starting at the Higbee warehouse and advanced to working on the floor at the store in downtown Cleveland to the position of Operations Manager at the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor. In his last two years of his retail career, Ron was transferred to the Dillard’s Euclid Square Mall store in a lateral move. After leaving Dillard’s, Ron worked for Bluestone Trading Co., until his retirement in 2004.
Ron and Betsy enjoyed travelling in his green 1996 Dodge Ram truck, visiting many lighthouses in Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Health issues in 2012 curtailed the long distance trips. Mileage on the truck upon its retirement was well over 212,000 miles.
Through his life, Ron enjoyed golfing, bowling, watching TV, following the Tribe, and feeding the birds. He was the dog whisperer to any dog he met, and the family pets surrounded him on our visits.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), Mentor, where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ron’s name may be made to V.F.W., 406 W. 34th St., Kansas City, MO 64111, or Samaritan’s Purse, c/o Operation Christmas Child, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
