Obituary for Joan Caroline Hughes
Joan Caroline (nee Smalling) Hughes, age 89, of Mentor, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 10, 2018.
Joan was born Oct. 8, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wisc., daughter of the late John Charles II and Anna Margaret (nee Hovanec) Smalling.
Joan was very active in her church, St. John Vianney Catholic Parish. She was an avid reader, loved to play solitaire on the computer, and enjoyed going to lunch with friends. Joan was very lucky to have a family that loved her very much. She will be greatly missed.
She was the cherished mother of Cynthia (William) Nicholl, Candace (Mitcheal) Toaddy, Randall (Jody) Hughes, and Richard Hughes; treasured grandmother of Stacy (Tom) Neace, Lauren Hughes, and Alexander Hughes; and beloved great-grandmother of Addison Neace.
Joan was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Hughes; and siblings, Elizabeth Kosanovic, John Smalling and Nancy Smalling.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St., (Rt. 615, N. of Rt. 2), Mentor, 44060, with a prayer service at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joan’s name are suggested to the Lake Humane Society, 7564 Tyler Blvd., Suite E, Mentor, OH 44060 or www.lakehumane.org.
