Obituary for Ruth H. McLeod
Funeral Mass for Ruth H. (nee Horton) McLeod, 86, will be 11 a.m. Friday, at Immaculate Conception Church, 37940 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Fr. Luigi Miola and Fr. Michael Troha will be officiating.
On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, Ruth Horton McLeod passed peacefully, in Alpharetta, Ga., in her daughter’s home surrounded by her family after several months of courageously battling poor health.
Ruth was born March 20, 1933, in Rocky River. She was the seventh of eight children born to Hubert and Dorothy Horton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands William E. “Bill” Palmer and Ray McLeod; sisters, Dorothy Kaiser, Jeanette Hollar, Winifred Novotny; and brothers, Hubert “Herb,” John and James “Jim” Horton.
Ruth is survived by her loving children, Pam (Paul) Brunner of Madison, Lori (Bob) Neundorfer of Davis, Calif., Joe (Sue) Palmer of Willoughby, John Palmer of Libertyville, Ill. and Sue (Bob ) McCormick of Alpharetta, Ga.; adoring grandchildren, Randy Brunner, Jenny (Dan) Brewton, Jeff (Lauren) Brunner, Tim Brunner, Leah (Erik) Larum, Sarah Neundorfer, Michael Neundorfer, William R., Evan J. and Joseph D. Palmer, Patrick and Christopher Palmer, and Connor and Maddie McCormick; and great-grandchildren, Garrett, Davis and Abigail Brewton, Grayson Larum and Stella Ruth Brunner. She also leaves behind her youngest sister, Linda (Jim) Boyd of Hilton Head, S.C.; sister-in-law’s, Marilyn Horton of Columbus, Miss., Clare (Herb) Horton of Madison and Mary G (Don) Sampson of Cuyahoga Falls; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dearest friends.
Ruth graduated from Rocky River High School. After graduation, she enrolled at Ohio State University, where she met Bill Palmer. They married in 1954 and moved their family to Madison, where they worked at the family business, Horton Nurseries. Bill passed in 1969, leaving Ruth to raise her five children, her finest accomplishment. She married Ray McLeod in 1974 and shared their love of traveling via motorhome throughout the country. Ruth and Ray also enjoyed many years of boating on Grand River and Lake Erie with their families.
Ruthie found joy in her life as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and in her many friendships. She was an avid golfer and tennis player at Madison Country Club. She was a hardworking and dedicated matriarch to her family who she cherished. Ruth was gifted in fostering each of her children abilities and encouraged them to pursue their dreams.
Ruth was happiest when she was with her children and grandkids, especially on the many occasions that they all could be together. Ruth also treasured the many world travels with her family and friends.
A woman of spirituality and faith, she made deep and lasting friendships in Madison, where she lived for 55 years and Breckenridge Village, where she lived for the last four years.
Ruth was cared for by the dedicated staff at Hospice of the Western Reserve, Hummingbird Home Care of Cleveland and ultimately Synergy Home Care of Alpharetta, Ga.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Burial will be private.
