Obituary for Howard James "Jim" Theiling

Howard James “Jim” Theiling, born April 18,1930, in Brady Lake, passed away peacefully at home in Willoughby Jan. 5, 2020, surrounded by family.
Raised on West 91st Street in Cleveland, Jim attended West High School and as a senior captained the football, basketball and track teams. He was a state champion in the hurdles his senior year in 1948. From West High, Jim attended Case Institute of Technology, where he was a standout in football and track. While at Case, he was selected as Cleveland’s Collegiate Player of the Year by the Cleveland Touchdown Club and was awarded Case’s Les Bale Award as its Most Outstanding football player in 1951. Following graduation in 1952, Jim owned a commercial roofing company. Jim was inducted into the Case Western Reserve Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976 and into the Greater Cleveland Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Jim was active in private life as a member of Acacia Country Club, the Cleveland Athletic Club (CAC) and a member of the CAC Bowling Hall of Fame.
Jim and Irene were married in and were members of Willoughby United Methodist Church. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years as a volunteer of the Lake County Council on Aging.
Jim was the beloved husband of 67 years to Irene (nee Gunvalsen), loving father of Susan Minor and Jim (Shelly) Theiling; devoted grandfather of Matthew (Tali) Minor, Marissa Minor, Molly Theiling, and Alex Theiling; great-grandfather of Taysia, Zev, and Noa; and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Theiling; parents, Howard and Marie (nee Reault) Theiling; and sister, Dorothy (Louis) Guido.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby, with a Celebration of Life to be held at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date.
