Obituary for Russell Jay Burns

Russell Jay  Burns
Russell Jay Burns, 90, of Muncie, Ind., formerly of Mentor, passed away, Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Ind.
He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in New Castle, Pa., the son of Donald and Rachel Patterson Burns, and grew up in Niles, where he graduated from McKinley High School.
Mr. Burns served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a law enforcement officer and Transportation Safety inspector for many years prior to his retirement.
Mr. Burns was a member of the Painesville Assembly of God and New Promise Evangelical Church while living in Ohio, and since coming to Muncie about six years ago, was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He loved riding his motorcycles, yardwork, being around dogs and horses, driving in the country, woodworking in the garage, Bible study, annual camping trips with his family and friends, and attending the Southern Gospel Quartets with his friend Bill Harman. In August of 2013, he was part of the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., visiting meaningful landmarks, and meeting Senators Robert and Elizabeth Dole, a story which was covered by John Carlson in the Muncie Star Press.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 56 years, Lila Barnhart Burns; daughter, Kimberly (Scott) Inks of Yorktown; two grandchildren, Ethan Scott Inks and Natalie Grace Inks; and sister, Marjorie Torrence of Niles.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tamira Jaye Burns; and two brothers, Bob and Warren Burns.
Friends may call 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, April 25, at New Promise Church, 8671 Euclid-Chardon Road, Kirtland, where a prayer service will also be held at 12 noon Saturday, April 25, following the visitation. Pastor Dale Diggs will officiate. Burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Heritage Hall Christian School, 6401 W. River Road, Muncie, IN 47304.
