Mary Elizabeth (nee Butler) Ewing, 89, passed away peacefully February 10, 2017, in Euclid, after a prolonged illness. Her family was at her bedside.
Mary was born November 29, 1927, in Charleston, W.Va., to Clarissa and Kelsey Butler. She married Joseph Austin Ewing August 31, 1945. They had been married 51 years when Joe passed on February 7, 1997.
In the 1950's, Mary worked as a switchboard operator. First, she worked for The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in Charleston, and later for Ohio Bell in Cleveland.
After she turned 50, she quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey, and learned to drive a car. Mary loved music, dancing, cooking, and providing for her family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Clarissa (Snoke) and Kelsey Butler; brothers, George, who passed in infancy, and her twin brother, Frank "Sonny" Butler (Louise); and loving sisters, Alta (Pete) White, Julia (Donald) Hill, and Alberta (George) Reynolds.
Mary is survived by her brother, Curtis Butler of Iron Station, N.C.; her four children, Daniel (Frances) of Perrysburg, Steven of Tampa, Fla., Curtis of Eastlake, and daughter Linda of Cleveland; five grandchildren, John (Colette), Scott, Robert, Sarah (Mark), and Kevin; and four great-grandchildren, Myah, Tyler, Lily and Josey.
Viewing and funeral services will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Interment will immediately follow at Knollwood Cemetery in Mayfield Heights.
