Funeral Mass for Frank J. Banach, 92, of Mentor, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 8560 Mentor Ave., Mentor. Fr. Tom Elsasser will officiate the Mass.
Mr. Banach passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Burton Healthcare Center in Burton.
Born Feb. 8, 1925, in Cleveland, he had been a resident of Lake County for the past 64 years, living in Wickliffe before moving to Mentor 46 years ago.
Mr. Banach was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and Purple Heart recipient, serving in Normandy and was a P.O.W., having been captured in Martelange, Belgium Jan. 4, 1945, just outside of Bastogne and was liberated in late April 1945 by the British. Frank was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Mentor, where he was very active, serving as an usher at 12 Noon Sunday Mass, a helper at the church festival for many years as an electrician and booth worker, and a former money counter at the church. He was also a member of Electrician’s Union IBEW Local 38 for 70 years and the Barbed Wire Buckeyes, loved to fish and enjoyed hunting.
Frank was the beloved husband of Marjorie E. (nee Leinweber) Banach; loving father of William F. (Betty) Banach and Marilyn A. (James) Goebelbecker; cherished grandfather of Timothy (Lisa) Banach, Michael (Mariya) Banach, David (Tina) Banach, James Goebelbecker and Heidi (James) Goodwin; and great-grandfather of Tao, Littie, Oliver, Grace, Anna, Bree, Ava, Kiera, Aylin and Caleb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Hellen (nee Biedus) Banach; and siblings, John and Mary.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center St. (Route 615, north of Route 2), Mentor. Entombment will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
